IN THE PRESS
In the words of local author Joy Williams: “The Parrot has an engagingly louche clientele, a pool table and a dart board, odd art, and an attitude best described by the sign over the booze shelves: ‘No Snivelling’.
We pin these honors on an unbelievable string of great bartenders, a never-ending parade of incredible customers, and music that some nights sounds so tasty that it could change the way you were wired from that night on–or at least change what you thought live music could be up till then.
And we want to thank each and every person who has ever drank a beer here, drawn a beer here, opened this place, closed this place, met someone here or left someone here, and all those road warriors who came and went and left it all on the stage.
Thanks to all of you, it’s your honor, your medal and your chest.

Travel and Leisure Magazine
In a kind of left-handed endorsement, they once said, “Come on in, it’s not as scary as it looks!”
-
Cosmopolitan
Cosmopolitan magazine once allegedly listed the Green Parrot as the “home of Key West most terminally-eligible bachelors”.
-
Playboy Magazine
The Green Parrot gets high accolades from the infamous mag as one of the Best Bars in America, in a list of 24 bars compiled by food and wine aficionados, editors, and critics. “The search for the definitive Key West saloon ends at The Green Parrot,” the writer confesses. “The management works tirelessly to avoid progress.” And amen to that! (May 2000)

Vogue Magazine
It’s another of those “go figure” moments in Green Parrot Testimonial History: a mention in Vogue Magazine. The writer so knowledgeably cites: “For a classic Key West experience, the century-old Green Parrot draws a cross-section of locals from construction workers to drag queens.” Yup. That about sums it up. (Feb. 2011)

Condé Nast Traveler
“While The Green Parrot’s nightly happy hour specials draw all types of crowds, it’s generally more of a locals' place. But it’s full of the kind of locals who aren’t annoyed that you're invading their turf (yes, your slightly sunburned face gives you away). Like any bar that’s more than 125 years old, you’re not coming here for polished marble countertops and sleek designer seating. The bar is made of wood, the stools are made of wood, and the décor is pure Americana with flags and loads of musical paraphernalia. The only way to stand out is to order something other than an ice cold beer.” (July 2019)

Florida Travel and Life Best of Florida
“The Green Parrot, an 1890 relic in Key West, is the quintessential dive bar where anything goes; live music makes it a late-night go-to place.” (2012)
-
Christine Sismondo
We proudly announce that the Green Parrot has been named one of the Top Ten Bars in America by Christine Sismondo, author of America Walks into a Bar: A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grogshops.
“Every time I’ve been to the Green Parrot in Key West, I’ve seen mind-blowingly good live music. It’s also off the dreaded Duval strip, which means a greater likelihood of interaction with the locals, and at our last call, home to a charming bar cat, Frank.”
-
Florida Monthly Magazine
The Green Parrot Bar was named the Best Live Music Venue in Florida for 2010 by Florida Monthly Magazine.
In the article, The Weird Magic of Key West, the writer names The Green Parrot the place for adventurous souls in Mile 0 to imbibe. (Sept. 2010)
-
Details Magazine
In a sidebar noting roadside jewels not to be missed along U.S.1 in Florida, Details magazine–the testosterone-drenched glossy in the Conde Nast stable–selected The Parrot as the one Watering Hole to be sampled on this road trip. Painting it as kind of a throwback and lauding us for our “salty characters and pulp ambiance”. (Nov. 2005)

Pints with a Past: Must-See Historic Bars Across the United States
We want to thank Frommer’s for including The Green Parrot in their recent article, “Pints With a Past: 10 Must-See Historical Bars Across The United States”.
Highlighting bars where “the past seems especially present and…are destinations unto themselves”, we are honored and flattered to be included in such heady company as New York City’s McSorley’s Old Ale House, Chicago’s Green Mill, Lafitte in New Orleans, and Newport, Rhode Island’s White Horse Tavern. We here at Southard and Whitehead, at the end of the road, remain very proud of our heritage, as well as our place in today’s Key West, and we are always grateful and appreciative when someone chooses to shine a light on our little corner and on our rich history, and of course, on our wonderful patrons and staff, who, same as it ever was, make us who we are today.
