In the Press

Playboy Magazine – May 2000
The Green Parrot gets high accolades from the infamous mag as one of the Best Bars in America, in a list of 24 bars compiled by food and wine aficionados, editors, and critics. “The search for the definitive Key West saloon ends at The Green Parrot,” the writer confesses. “The management works tirelessly to avoid progress.” And amen to that!

Airtran GO Magazine – January 2012
This insider’s ride into Key West’s sights and sounds notes that a stop at the Green Parrot for our famous root beer barrels might be in order.

The Best of Florida

Florida Travel + Life’s Best of Florida 2012
Florida Travel + Life magazine published their top-ten lists for getting the most out of the Sunshine State and guess who’s on it? Under Old Drinking Spots on the Florida Keys Top 10, there we are: “The Green Parrot, an 1890 relic in Key West, is the quintessential dive bar where anything goes; live music makes it a late-night go-to place.” The list also features the best beaches, boating and more.

Christine Sismondo’s book, ‘America Walks into a Bar: A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops’ – July 2011
Christine Sismondo knows a good place to get a stiff drink. In America Walks into a Bar, Sismondo names her 10 favorite bars in America. And The Green Parrot’s on the list. Maybe it’s because of our “mind-blowingly good live music“, our location “off the dreaded Duval strip” or “charming bar cat, Frank,” as Sismondo writes. Either way, we won’t dispute her obviously stellar taste.

February 2011 issue

Vogue Magazine – February 2011

It’s another of those “go figure” moments in Green Parrot Testimonial History: a mention in Vogue Magazine. The writer so knowledgeably cites: “For a classic Key West experience, the century-old Green Parrot draws a cross-section of locals from construction workers to drag queens.” Yup. That about sums it up.

Florida Monthly Magazine – September 2010
The Green Parrot Bar was named the Best Live Music Venue in Florida for 2010 by Florida Monthly Magazine. We replaced Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park for the top spot. We pledge to continue riding on these coattails by continuing to bring completely amazing, bring-the-house-down bands to Key West.

Garden & Gun – February/March 2010
This classic Key West story begins like this: “
Always eccentric and wildly beautiful, the southernmost city has long beckoned adventurous souls, whether they’re dropping in or dropping out.” In the article, The Weird Magic of Key West, the writer names The Green Parrot the place for adventurous souls in Mile 0 to imbibe. “… recently,” adds the writer, “the unthinkable happened. It started accepting credit cards.”

Details Magazine – November 2005

In a sidebar noting roadside jewels not to be missed along U.S.1 in Florida, Details magazine–the testosterone-drenched glossy in the Conde Nast stable–selected The Parrot as the one Watering Hole to be sampled on this road trip. Painting it as kind of a throwback and lauding us for our “salty characters and pulp ambiance”, Details urged readers to forgo other gin mills for us. And for that we thank them.

Florida-based writer Bud Navero
Bud Navero waxes such beautiful poetic about the historic journey of Green Parrot legend that we had to post it on our blog and trumpet it out to the world. Not only is Bud an amazing writer, he captures the spirit of the Parrot so well.
